Highlights of the Orient - (An Example of a Tour)

Day 1, Wed. TRANSPACIFIC FLIGHT.
Connect with your flight leaving San Francisco this afternoon. (In-flight meals)


Day 2, Thu. ARRIVE IN TOKYO,JAPAN.
Arrival time is late afternoon because a day is "lost" crossing the International Date Line. Meet your tour director and transfer to the hotel.


Day 3, Fri. TOKYO.
A free day for independent activities or to join our full-day optional excursion: a visit to the historic city of Kamakura, a cruise on Lake Hakone, a cable-car ride up 4,354-foot Mt. Komagatake, and finally a thrilling ride on the famous bullet train back to Tokyo. (B)


Day 4, Sat. TOKYO-BEIJING, CHINA.
A local guide takes you through the Asakusa district's alleys and covered passageways on the morning sightseeing tour. Then a visit to the MEIJI SHRINE, a magnificent 20th-century Shinto monument set in elaborate gardens. After an included lunch, transfer to the airport for the evening flight to Beijing. (B,L)




Day 5, Sun. BEIJING.
A full-day tour starts with a visit to the IMPERIAL PALACE, once the sacred home of China's Great Emperors. Nearby is Tian An Men Square, the largest public square in the world, where the Republic of China was proclaimed in 1949. A short drive out of the city leads to the former imperial SUMMER PALACE, a complex of pavilions, temples, and galleries situated around an immense lake. The whole structure was rebuilt by the Dowager Empress Ci Xi in 1888 after British and French troops burned it down. This evening's special Chinese dinner features delectable Peking Duck. (B,L,D)


Day 6, Mon. BEIJING.
The GREAT WALL OF CHINA once stretched for over 3,000 miles across northern China's most barren terrain. The part that has been best preserved and restored lies 40 miles north of Beijing in the village of Badaling. A walk along the wall affords unforgettable vistas of this mammoth fortress spanning the countryside. Returning to Beijing, visit the MING TOMBS, underground burial sites for 13 of the Ming emperors. Day 7 Tue. BEIJING-BANGKOK, THAILAND.
Time still for last-minute shopping today. Perhaps visit the Friendship Store, which most visitors have found to be the best in China. Late afternoon transfer for the flight to exotic Bangkok. (B,L,in-flight meal)


Day 8, Wed. BANGKOK.
WAT ARUN, the Temple of the Dawn, is first on your sightseeing agenda. Next are the GRAND PALACE, the truly grand seat of the court of old Siam, and the adjoining royal temple, WAT PHRA KEO, housing the 31inch Emerald Buddha. Dinner this evening is aboard a luxurious teak barge, the Tassaneeya Naval Cruise the broad Chao Phraya River, past Bangkok's splendid temples and palaces. You also see the landing stage from which the gilded royal barge departs on the king's ceremonial visits. (B,D)


Day 9, Thu. BANGKOK.
At one time the main streets of Bangkok were canals (klongs and a good deal of life today is still waterborne. As the day is at leisure, consider our optional full-day excursion. First a scenic drive past many rice fields and fruit plantations to southern Thailand. Then take a ride on a long-tailed speedboat out to the floating markets, visit the nearby township of Nakhon Pathom, and stop at the Rose Garden for lunch followed by a folklore performance at its Thai cultural village. Day 10, Fri. BANGKOK-SINGAPORE.
A morning flight to cosmopolitan Singapore, the world's second-busiest seaport. After checking in at the hotel, the remainder of the day is free. Perhaps enjoy a leisurely walk around this clean, compact city, whose mixture of Oriental peoples inspired the nickname "Instant Asia." (B,in-flight meal)


Day 11, Sat. SINGAPORE.
East and West blend neatly in this island republic, and a city tour shows off its sights: Queen Elizabeth Walk overlooking the harbor, the statue of Sir Stamford Raffles, Mount Faber with its sweeping view of the city and waterfront, and the BOTANICAL
GARDENS noted for their hybrid orchids. The afternoon is free. Take an optional ride in a trishaw, a combination of rickshaw and tricycle through the bustling city roads to the famous Raffles Hotel. (B)


Day 12, Sun. SINGAPORE-HONG KONG.
This morning board your flight to Hong Kong, Asia's vibrant commercial capital. Your approach is a memorable experience, affording sweeping views of countless islands dotting the South China Sea, and Hong Kong's teeming harbor sparkling in the sun. (B,in-flight meal)


Day 13, Mon. HONG KONG.
Take a cable car up to Victoria Peak for a panoramic view of this one-of-a-kind port city. Morning sightseeing continues with a drive to Repulse Bay, a popular beach, and Stanley Market, a narrow street jammed with inexpensive clothing and arts and crafts stalls. Last stop on the tour is a JEWELRY FACTORY, where fine gems are designed and handcrafted. Tonight we recommend an optional sunset cruise on Hong Kong's magnificent harbor. (B)




Day 14, Tue. HONG KONG.
A free day to explore this exciting city. You may wish to sign up for our optional trip to the Portuguese colony of Macau. The excursion also includes a visit to an unspoiled area of southern China. This evening your tour director hosts a festive farewell dinner, the perfect finale to a great touring adventure. (B,D)


Day 15, Wed. HONG KONG-HOMEBOUND FLIGHT.
Late this morning transfer to the airport for your flight home. Cross the International Date Line and arrive back in San Francisco on the same day. (B,in-flight meals)
